Espejo is Spanish for mirror. In this two-panel painting I present the double or reflected image of a proud Mexican Indian woman. One wears a warm red shawl, the other a cool blue one. I painted these mirror images so that they can be displayed back to back or face to face. Facing away the woman does not see herself, yet her reflection is very much there; a shadow or a guard. Facing her reflection she is forced to see her true self, a reminder that gazing at ourselves in the mirror is a very private act. Looking without or looking within, there is symmetry in form and a sense of wholeness.
